How traumatic brain injuries affect victims

A New Jersey resident could sustain a traumatic brain injury after experiencing a sudden blow to the head during a car accident, a fall or a violent assault. A TBI can also be caused by an open head injury from a bullet or flying object that penetrates a person's brain.

There are many consequences of a TBI that can have a significant impact on an accident victim's enjoyment of life and ability to live independently. A TBI can cause physical, behavioral, cognitive, communication and sensory deficits. Some of the physical problems associated with a TBI include headaches, dizziness, loss of balance and paralysis. People with this type of an injury may also lose the ability to feel sensations in the same way that they used to.

Some of the cognitive changes that people with TBI experience can make it difficult for them to remember things, problem solve, concentrate and organize. With deficient reasoning skills, a person with a TBI could act impulsively and have a hard time completing simple tasks. Many people with brain injuries have mood swings, depression and become frustrated easily. Speech problems like aphasia, dysarthria and apraxia are also common with people who have bran damage. Inability to coordinate the mouth and throat muscles could also result in problems with swallowing.

When a person's brain damage is the result of another party's negligent or willful actions, the injured person may file a personal injury complaint against the responsible party. A lawyer may be able to help someone with a TBI to gather all of the necessary evidence to prove liability and pursue a monetary award for damages.
