Drivers should be more careful on certain days of the year

New Jersey motorists may be interested in learning that there are specific days throughout the year when being out on the road is more hazardous than at other times. There typically is an increase in motor vehicle accidents over major holiday weekends because there are simply more travelers on the roads.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, drunk driving is another huge factor that raises the incidence of vehicle crashes over times like Memorial Day weekend and July 4. While there is a rise in highway accidents during many holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas, New Year's Day is reportedly the deadliest day on U.S. roadways, due to the prevalence of impaired drivers.

Statistics show other annual events such as the onset of daylight saving time can lead to dangerous driving conditions as well. A division of the NHTSA reported motor vehicle accident fatalities rise by 17 percent on the Monday following the start of DST, in part due to the fact that many drivers are somewhat sleep-deprived. Another dangerous day to be out driving is Black Friday, when shoppers searching for bargains are involved in accidents in crowded parking lots. It may not be a surprise that accidents tend to increase in the vicinity of National Football League stadiums on game days. Also not surprising is that these accidents are even more frequent when the home team loses.

Those who are injured in a motor vehicle accident often incur high medical bills as well as lost income due to an inability to work. If the accident has been caused by the negligence of another driver, it may be advisable to seek the assistance of an attorney in preparing and filing a personal injury lawsuit against the responsible party.
