Understanding your needs following loss of loved one

Dealing with the loss of a loved one is, for many, the toughest thing they will ever have to undergo. Losing someone who is close to you through an accident, negligence or criminal act can be even more devastating, adding shock, anger and confusion to the grief. The team at Silvi, Fedele & Honschke respects what you are going through. We work compassionately with survivors through any legal matters, whether that means probating a will, seeking an OSHA investigation or bringing a wrongful death lawsuit against responsible parties.

Death affects everyone differently, according to the American Psychological Association, and coping mechanisms are varied as well. It can take several months to a few years for survivors to adjust to such a personal loss. Grieving is a crucial process in coming to grips with the death, and you need the time and space to do so. Studies show that many people can recover without help if given time and support, but you must also continue to engage in social relationships and healthy habits.

Nobody expects you to “get over it,” but there are several things you can and should do to help get on with life:

  • Talk about it: Speaking with others about the death helps you understand the event. Refusing to talk about it can be a form of denial that can lead to isolation and frustration among others.
  • Accept your feelings: Whatever you feel, it is not wrong. People have a variety of emotions following a death, including anger, frustration, sadness, even relief or exhaustion. They are all normal.
  • Reach out: Help others cope with the same conditions. Any time you invest in others makes you feel good as well and both of you get to talk about your grief.
  • Honor your memories: Celebrate the deceased one’s life by making a collage, planting a tree or giving to a charity in their name.

Know that, while you are taking the next steps in your grief, our legal team recognizes that you need an extra measure of understanding while working through next steps in legal concerns. For more information about wrongful death, visit our webpage.
