3 driving tips for winter weather

On Behalf of | Nov 16, 2018 | Car Accidents

With winter finally here, drivers in New Jersey are waking to find snow-covered roads and other weather-related hazards. Safe driving is a must in this case, as careless behavior behind the wheel can easily lead to accidents when conditions are poor. Accordingly, the following tips will help you stay safe and sound this holiday season.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends packing your vehicle with the appropriate winter-ready supplies. This includes an ice scraper for your windows, as well as a bag of salt or sand to gain traction on slick roads. You also want to keep things like jumper cables and flares handy in case you run into trouble on the road. If you end up stranded, you definitely want to have extra blankets and warm clothes in your vehicle.

If you plan on taking a long trip, make sure you remain alert and aware when on the road. Keep distractions at bay, such as talking or texting, eating behind the wheel, or carrying on a conversation with passengers. Also, make sure you’re driving in a manner appropriate for the weather conditions. Refrain from speeding, especially when roads are slick, and brake cautiously to prevent skidding.

AAA also recommends checking out the weather conditions before you head out. In the event of a storm, consider postponing your trip for a few hours. Provide your friends and family at the destination information on your expected arrival so they can send of help if you need it. Also, never drive tired on long trips. Be sure to get enough sleep prior to leaving and take breaks as needed when you’re on the road.
