Neck fracture: Symptoms and diagnosis

On Behalf of | Oct 18, 2019 | Workers' Compensation

A neck fracture is among the most serious type of injury, as it can result in pain, discomfort, paralysis and even death.

If you suspect a neck injury, such as after a workplace accident, you should not attempt to move. Instead, call 911 and remain where you are until help arrives.

Some of the most common symptoms associated with a neck fracture include:

  • Swelling in the area
  • Severe pain
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Extreme pain when moving
  • Reduced feeling in the legs and/or arms
  • Muscle weakness

It’s critical to receive an immediate diagnosis for your neck injury. This starts with visiting a local emergency room as quickly as possible. Your doctor will examine the injured area, while also conducting a neurological exam. Imaging tests are also used to pinpoint the location and extent of the injury. These include:

  • X-ray
  • CT scan
  • MRI

Once your injuries are known, your medical team will work with you to implement a treatment strategy for beginning the recovery process. The type of treatment depends primarily on the severity of your injury.

A neck fracture is likely to keep you out of work for an extended period of time, so don’t wait to learn more about your legal rights for receiving workers’ compensation benefits. You’ll want to file a claim as quickly as possible, as you’ll need the money to help you financially as you recover.

In the event of a claim denial, such as if your employer states you didn’t suffer the injury at work, follow the appeals process until you receive the compensation you rightfully deserve.
