On Behalf of | Oct 1, 2020 | Brain Injury

Suffering a traumatic brain injury can alter every aspect of a person’s life. Loved ones of a person affected by traumatic brain injury may feel that they no longer recognize the person that they love, and even the most basic daily activities can be difficult to accomplish.

While the prognosis of a traumatic brain injury depends on the patient and the severity of the injury, there are many different treatment options available. In many cases, treatments can successfully help an injured patient return to living a normal life. These include:

Immediate emergency care

Immediately after the injury, medical professionals will focus on ensuring that the patient has an adequate blood supply and enough oxygen.

Medications

Coma-inducing drugs may be administered to help the patient heal from the trauma. If the patient is having seizures, they will likely be given anti-seizure drugs. Diuretics may additionally be administered to help manage pain.

Surgery

Surgery may be necessary to repair skull fractures, stop bleeding in the brain, or to remove clotted blood. It may also be necessary to undergo surgery so that pressure in the brain can be relieved.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation can be undertaken for months or even years after an injury. Speech and language therapy may be necessary in addition to occupational and physical therapy. All of these types of rehabilitation can help the patient to improve their quality of life.

If you or a loved one has suffered a traumatic brain injury, there may be ways to take legal action so damages can be gained. This can help you to pay for the costs of treatment in the long-term.
