Preventing common injuries at work

While some jobs have more inherent risk than others, there are hazards in every workplace that could lead to injuries and medical and financial setbacks. More than one-third of the 3 million job injuries that happen annually around the country are serious enough to require time off from work. New Jersey employers and employees alike may want to learn about common injuries that happen while on the job and ways to avoid getting hurt.

Even those who work in cubicles are at risk for a job injury from repetitive motions as those who continually complete the same task could sprain and tear ligaments or suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome or migraines. Taking breaks and creating an ergonomic work station can help prevent these injuries. Slips, trips and falls are dangerous for all employees when these accidents occur because of obstacles when walking and slippery or wet floors. Keeping heavy traffic areas clear and using signs to warn people of slippery surfaces or debris can stop these incidents.

Falls are also common when workers are exposed to heights, and they could cause serious injuries like head trauma, spinal cord injuries or fractures. Poorly-maintained work equipment is hazardous, so checking equipment before use and wearing safety gear is important.

People who are injured on the job are in most cases eligible to file a claim for workers' compensation benefits under their employer's insurance coverage. These benefits can include necessary medical treatment and a portion of wages that are lost when the injured worker is in recovery and unable to return to the job. An attorney can sometimes assist with the preparation and filing of the required claim and supporting documentation.
