Speeding and deadly accidents

On Behalf of | Dec 12, 2023 | Car Accidents, Injuries

Speeding is one of the most common reasons for motor vehicle collisions in New Jersey and across the country. Whether a driver deliberately presses down on the gas or accidentally drifts to a higher speed means little. What matters is how dangerous road conditions become when a driver does not stay within posted speed limits or travels at speeds safe for current conditions. Speeding drivers who cause crashes will likely face civil claims from victims.

Speeding and harm

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) presents concerning information about speeding-related accident statistics. Data shows that fatal speeding crashes increased 28.1% from 2018 to 2021. In 2018, the number of deadly crashes was 8,632, whereas in 2021, 11,057 fatalities occurred. Motorcycles were involved in more crashes than cars and other vehicles, but the numbers for cars and light-duty vehicles experienced many crashes.

Reviewing statistics revealing facts about speeding may prompt some to drive more carefully and defensively. However, even safe drivers could face risks from reckless ones.

Speeding hazards

When someone drives too fast with their vehicle, they risk losing control. The risk of losing control increases when road conditions are hazardous. Even when the weather and other factors are mild, a speeding driver might be unable to slow or stop their car when traveling too fast. Accidents may happen if the driver cannot bring the vehicle to a stop fast enough to avoid a crash. A personal injury lawsuit may follow when the negligent driver causes harm.

Speeding is a moving violation. Proving that the driver operated a vehicle at high speeds could establish negligence. Accident victims may see compensation for their losses, and punitive damages might be possible under certain conditions.
