How to work safely outdoors this winter

If you live in New Jersey, you understand that the winter months will bring cold temperatures, snow, ice and many other conditions to the area. And if you work outdoors, you know that maintaining your safety in inclement weather is easier said than done.

Here are four tips you can follow to work safely outdoors this winter:

  • Wear warm clothing: Even if you'll only be outdoors for a few minutes at a time, it's critical to wear warm clothing. For example, wearing layers will allow you to add and remove clothing as necessary.
  • Take breaks: The more time you spend in the cold, the greater chance there is of a cold related injury or illness. Get into the habit of taking regular breaks throughout your day, as this gives you time to warm your body.
  • Protect exposed skin: For example, the face, hands and ears are at high risk of frostbite. Take special precautions with these parts of your body.
  • Drink warm beverages: While working, do your best to drink warm beverages such as coffee, tea or hot chocolate. And of course, make it a habit to do so during your breaks.

Even if you attempt to work safely outdoors during the winter season, inclement weather has the potential to cause a serious injury or illness. If this occurs at work, report your situation to your employer and seek immediate medical treatment.

Depending on the severity of your condition, your medical team may suggest that you avoid cold weather for an extended period of time. This may lead you to file a claim for workers' compensation benefits.
