You have probably hit your head many times in your life, so it might not worry you that much if you hit your head in a car crash. If you cannot see any signs of blood or brains pouring out, you may think that all will soon be fine, just as it has been when you hit your head on the sports field or fell over as a child.
This could be a potentially fatal mistake. The only way you can be sure you are fine, is to go to the emergency ward and have a doctor check you out as soon as possible.
Traumatic brain injuries
Traumatic brain injuries do not always give many tell-tale signs at first of their severity. Seeing stars, feeling a little dizzy or having a sore head might be all you notice straight after the accident. Yet a lot of problematic things could be going on inside your skull.
Your brain is soft and your skull is hard. Even if your skull did not hit any other hard surfaces, such as the steering wheel, the crash could have thrown your brain against the inside of the skull with sufficient force to do serious damage. Other times, there may be a bit of skull chipped off that has penetrated the brain, that you might not notice through your mat of hair. Or there may be blood pooling inside the skull that, with time, will build and put pressure on the brain and damage it.
The very fact that this is happening inside your skull means you may be unaware of the majority or entirety of it. Getting that check-up is a vital safety measure, and it also allows you to file a more complete claim for compensation if the doctors do discover brain damage.
